First, it is necessary to create a new texture with the Maps / Render > Assign Materials command, writing by command line "m", show a dialog with list of textures, and pressing the Insert button and selecting the image file in JPEG, BMP or TIFF format. You can then use this texture to assign it to different objects on the surface with the Assign Materials command.
