In the Profiles > Get Profile command dialog, click the Source button. Instead of the default Digital Terrain Model option, choose the Layer List option. Then select the layers that contain elevation information that the program can cut.
Note that it is not necessary, nor in most cases recommended, to create a surface to obtain profiles.
